Gotthard Base Tunnel with a length of 57 km (35.4 mi) is the longest railroad tunnel in the world and it will be opened in 2017 beneath the Alps in Switzerland. The breakthrough in the east tube was finally achieved on Fri 15 Oct 2010. You can read more about the tunnel.
